Daedong Credit Bank
10 Years of Commercial Banking Experience in the DPR of Korea
Background
Daedong Credit Bank – DCB – is based in Pyongyang, and provides a range of commercial and retail banking services to the foreign community in the DPRK – that community includes foreign companies, local offices and branches of foreign companies, foreign-invested joint ventures, foreign individuals and relief agencies. DCB was established in 1995, and, celebrating its 10th anniversary on 1st December 2005, has an unrivalled wealth of experience in the DPRK.
It is the only bank in the DPRK with a resident expatriate General Manager, Nigel Cowie, who has held the position since the startup. It is itself a joint venture, the foreign partner being a company owned by a group of professional fund managers in Hong Kong, as well as by General Manager Nigel Cowie.
Services
It offers a range of normal banking services, including current accounts, foreign exchange, remittances, trade finance and other lending. There is often a belief amongst possible investors and business partners with the DPRK that it is difficult to get their money out. This is not the case, and DCB facilitates on a daily basis the remittance of funds covering imports, repatriation of profit, dividends and so on, as well as the payment of local expenses, all in hard currency. Corporate Responsibility As a responsible member of the international financial community, and as a service to its customers, DCB takes very seriously its obligations with regard to money laundering. It was the first bank in the DPRK with a written anti-money laundering procedure manual circulated to all staff and accepted by its overseas correspondent banks.
